Macdara Woods / Receta de Houdini

Aflojar las cadenas es fácil
incluso abajo en lo oscuro
pero luego están la bolsa de lona
y la caja de metal con cerrojos
trabada desde afuera
y cuando acabas con la caja
y se termina el aire
todavía quedan las brazadas
y el hielo de la superficie
y cuando lo atraviesas
descubres que estuvo lloviendo durante semanas.

En esa instancia los que saben
respiran profundamente
recortados debajo de la luna
en la hospitalaria pendiente del mar
y salen de entre las olas
a través de la curva de la playa
encaminándose a la casa–
para encender un fuego
en un hogar totalmente limpio
la ceniza afuera
en un balde galvanizado.

Houdini’s Receipt

Loosening the chains is easy
even down in the dark
but then there’s the canvas sack
and the bolted metal box
locked from the outside
and when you’re through the box
and the air’s running out
there are still the fathoms of water
and the surface ice
and when you break through that
you find it’s been raining for weeks

At this point those who know
breathe full and deep
remarkable beneath the moon
in the welcoming lean of the sea
and walk out of the waves
across the curve of the beach
to make for home—
to make a fire
in a hearth swept clean
ash outside
in a galvanised bucket
