Lorna Shaughnessy / Permiso

Permiso

cuatro idiomas, nacimientos, casamiento y enfermedad,

Permission
For Fiona
It has taken only tour hours/ to re-trace our steps across desert,/
rainforest and bog; three continents,/ four languages, births,
marriage and disease,/ until we come to another tongue.// It can take
thirty-two years/ for a story to be heard: the place may not be
right,/ nor te moment, and until now no language/ seemed up to the
task.// It has taken you this long to telmm me this.// You are living
proof of a forgotten self;/ your presence, the witness I lacked./ As
we talk, I recover fluency/ in a language we knew all along, eyeball/
myself in your memories, and find/ I’ve run out of reasons not to
speak.
